How do I buy a phone safely in Kenya?
Browse listings, contact the seller directly on WhatsApp or by phone, and agree to meet in a public place. Before you pay, check the phone's IMEI and test it. Our safety guide walks through every step, and how to check a used phone is not stolen covers verifying it with the Communications Authority.
Do I need an account to contact a seller?
Yes you do. It’s easy to set up an account with us. Simply click on the Register button at the top of the page, and sign up!
Can I pay for a phone with M-Pesa?
Mzuri.co.ke does not handle payments. We may do in the future, but for now, we are just a marketplace that connects buyers to sellers. Once a price has been agreed, it is then up to the buyer and seller to arrange payment and phone delivery.
What should I do if a seller asks for a deposit before I see the phone?
Don’t pay it. A genuine seller will let you see and test the phone before you hand over any money. If a seller is pushing for a deposit, it could be a scam, so walk away and report the listing to us.
Can I get a phone delivered to my county, or do I have to meet the seller?
That is up to you and the seller. Some sellers are happy to send phones by courier or matatu parcel service to other counties, while others prefer to meet in person. We always recommend meeting in a safe, public place so you can inspect the phone before you pay.
How do I know if a listing is a “Great deal” or a “Fair price”?
We compare the asking price with our price guide for that model, storage and condition. If the price is well below what similar phones are selling for, we mark it as a Great deal. If it is in line with the market, we mark it as a Fair price. Not every listing has a badge, because we only rate models in our price guide and listings priced above the market do not get one.
Are the phones on Mzuri new or used?
Both. Sellers list brand new, ex-UK and second hand phones and tablets, and each listing states the condition. You can filter all listings by condition, price, brand and county to find exactly what you want.
What is the difference between ex-UK, refurbished and second hand phones?
An ex-UK phone is a used phone that has been imported from the UK, and they are often in very good condition. A refurbished phone has been checked, repaired and cleaned up so it works like new, and some parts may have been replaced. A second hand phone is simply one that has been used by someone else before, usually here in Kenya. Each listing on Mzuri shows the condition, so you know what you are getting.
What does “Lipa pole pole” mean on a listing?
Lipa pole pole means “pay slowly”. It shows that the seller is happy to accept payment in instalments rather than all at once. The terms are agreed between you and the seller, so make sure you are both clear on the amounts and dates before any money changes hands, and only pay a deposit once you have seen and tested the phone.
Can I swap or exchange my old phone for another one on Mzuri?
Yes. On Mzuri, we have an option to swap or exchange when you list your phone on our marketplace.
Is it free to list a phone for sale?
Yes. Listing on Mzuri is completely free and we take 0% commission when your phone sells. You keep the full amount the buyer pays. Post a free listing in under two minutes.
How much is my phone worth in Kenya?
Use our free phone value estimator to get a realistic resale range for your model and condition in Kenyan shillings, based on what similar phones sell for right now.
Can I sell a phone that is still on an M-Kopa or other financing plan?
No. Until a financing plan has been fully paid off, the phone still belongs to the finance company and it can be locked remotely. You will need to clear the balance before you list it on Mzuri.
How do I mark my phone as sold or remove my listing?
Log in to your account, go to your listings and open the one you want to change. From there you can mark your phone as sold once the deal is done, or delete the listing if you no longer want to sell it.
