How to Back Up Your Data Before Selling Your Phone
Selling your old phone is a great way to fund an upgrade. But before that handset leaves your hands, you need to do two things: rescue your data, and wipe it clean so a stranger never sees your photos, M-Pesa messages or WhatsApp chats.
Skip the backup and you lose years of photos and contacts forever. Skip the wipe and you hand a buyer your private life. This guide walks you through backing up an Android phone or an iPhone in Kenya, then resetting it safely so it is ready to sell.
Before You Start: What You Need to Save
Make a quick mental checklist of what actually matters:
- Photos and videos
- Contacts
- WhatsApp chats and media
- M-Pesa / banking app data and statements
- Documents, downloads and notes
- App logins and two-factor authentication (2FA) apps
- Saved Wi-Fi passwords and browser bookmarks
Now let us back it all up. Make sure you are on Wi-Fi, not mobile data; backups use a lot of bundles and can run into hundreds of MB or several GB.
How to Back Up an Android Phone (Tecno, Infinix, Samsung, Xiaomi, etc.)
Most phones sold in Kenya are Android, and Google makes backing them up straightforward.
1. Back Up to Your Google Account
- Open Settings.
- Go to Google > Backup (on some phones it is System > Backup, or Accounts > Google).
- Tap Back up now.
This saves your contacts, call history, SMS, app data, device settings and Wi-Fi passwords to Google Drive. When you sign in to your new phone with the same Google account, it offers to restore all of it.
2. Back Up Photos and Videos With Google Photos
- Install or open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture, then Photos settings > Backup.
- Turn Backup on and let it finish over Wi-Fi.
Google gives every account 15GB of free storage shared across Photos, Drive and Gmail. If you have a lot of photos, you may need to buy a Google One plan (from around KSh 300 per month) or copy photos to a computer or external drive instead.
3. Back Up WhatsApp Separately
WhatsApp is not covered by the normal Google backup. Inside WhatsApp:
- Tap the three dots, then Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Choose your Google account and tap Back up.
When you install WhatsApp on the new phone with the same phone number, it restores your chats from this backup.
4. Export Contacts (Optional Safety Net)
To be safe, go to the Contacts app, open the menu, and choose Export to .vcf file. Save that file to Google Drive or email it to yourself. Now your contacts survive even if a sync fails.
5. Move Money and Important Files
Save bank statements or M-Pesa records you need, then sign out of and remove banking and payment apps before wiping.
How to Back Up an iPhone
Apple's iCloud makes iPhone backups simple, and there is also a free computer option.
Option A: Back Up to iCloud (Easiest)
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Turn it on and tap Back Up Now.
This saves photos, app data, settings, messages and more. Apple gives 5GB free, which fills up fast. You can buy more iCloud+ storage (50GB from around KSh 130 per month) for one month just to complete the backup, then restore to your new iPhone.
Option B: Back Up to a Computer (Free, No Storage Limit)
If you do not want to pay for iCloud space:
- On a Mac, connect the iPhone and use Finder.
- On a Windows PC, install iTunes (or the Apple Devices app), connect the iPhone, and click Back Up Now.
Tick encrypt local backup to also save passwords and health data. This is free and as large as your computer's disk.
Back Up WhatsApp on iPhone
In WhatsApp, go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and back up to iCloud. Restore it on the new iPhone using the same number.
The Most Important Step: Sign Out Before You Wipe
This is where many sellers in Kenya get stuck, and where buyers get scammed. A phone still linked to your account is worthless to a buyer; it cannot be activated, and the buyer cannot use it. Worse, leaving accounts active exposes your private data.
On Android
- Open Settings > Accounts (or Passwords & accounts).
- Tap your Google account and choose Remove account.
- Remove any Samsung, Mi or other manufacturer accounts too.
- Sign out of WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, your banking and M-Pesa-linked apps.
Removing the Google account first disables Factory Reset Protection, so the next owner can set the phone up cleanly.
On iPhone
- Go to Settings > [your name] and scroll down to Sign Out.
- Enter your Apple ID password to turn off Find My iPhone / Activation Lock.
An iPhone sold with Activation Lock still on is bricked for the buyer. Never skip this.
Now Factory Reset the Phone
Once your data is backed up and your accounts are removed:
- Android: Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).
- iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
Finally, remove your SIM card and any microSD card before handing the phone over. Those hold contacts, photos and your number.
Quick Pre-Sale Checklist
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Back up photos, contacts, apps and WhatsApp.
- Export contacts as a safety net.
- Save bank/M-Pesa records, then remove finance apps.
- Sign out of Google / Apple ID and all accounts.
- Factory reset the phone.
- Remove SIM and memory card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a factory reset delete everything, including my photos? Yes. A factory reset wipes all photos, contacts, messages and apps from the phone. That is why you must back up to Google, iCloud or a computer first, and remove your SIM and memory card before selling.
Do I need to back up WhatsApp separately? Yes. WhatsApp chats are not included in the standard Google or full iCloud backup. Use WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup to save them, then restore on the new phone using the same number.
Why must I sign out of my Google or Apple account before selling? A phone still linked to your account cannot be activated by the buyer (Factory Reset Protection on Android, Activation Lock on iPhone), making it unsellable. Signing out also protects your private data. Always remove your accounts before wiping.
How much does extra cloud storage cost in Kenya for a backup? Google One starts at around KSh 300 per month for 100GB, and iCloud+ at around KSh 130 per month for 50GB. You can subscribe for a single month just to finish the backup, then cancel. Backing up to a computer is free.
What should I remove from the phone before handing it over? Your SIM card and any microSD memory card, since they store contacts, photos and your number. Also confirm the factory reset is complete and all accounts are signed out before the buyer pays.
