Calus M17 vs C17 vs IP 17 Pro Max: Which Is Which? (Kenya)
Search Jumia Kenya for Calus and, depending on the week, you can find four phones called 17 Pro Max. One is a C17. One is an IP 17. One is an M17. One has no letter at all. And the listing for a 256GB "17 Pro Max" has described itself, a few lines further down, as the IP 17 Pro Max.
Calus is a budget brand better known in Kenya for kabambe feature phones, flip phones and power banks. Its 17 Pro Max family borrows the iPhone 17 Pro Max's name, size and camera styling, and sells for a small fraction of the price. The letters in front of the number are supposed to tell the models apart. On the spec sheets, they mostly do not.

The Short Answer
- Calus 17 Pro Max (no letter): the older, smaller model. 6.6-inch screen, 128GB, dual rear camera, no 5G claim.
- Calus C17 Pro Max: 6.9-inch screen, 256GB, the biggest battery of the group at 5,500mAh, and the cheapest. Makes no 5G or 50MP claims.
- Calus IP 17 Pro Max: 6.9-inch screen, 512GB (with a 256GB version), advertised with 50MP cameras front and rear and 5G. The most heavily marketed.
- Calus M17 Pro Max: the same advertised template as the IP 17, but with 128GB. Watch out: M-Horse, a different brand, sells its own M17 Pro Max in Kenya too.
What the Listings Claim
These are the sellers' figures from Jumia Kenya and Kilimall listings, not tested results. Calus listings come and go, and prices move constantly with promotions: when we checked on 15 October 2026, neither site had any of the four smartphones listed, so the prices below are from earlier listings and should be treated as a guide only.

Calus 17 Pro Max: The Original
The plain 17 Pro Max is also sold outside Kenya, including in the Gulf, which is useful: more sellers means more consistent specs. Its listings agree on a 6.6-inch HD screen, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage with a microSD slot, a 5,200mAh battery and a "26MP" rear camera with a 13MP selfie camera, running Android 14 on an unnamed octa-core chip.
It is the smallest of the four and the least ambitious on paper, and its listings do not claim 5G. Jumia has had it at KSh 12,299. If you see a 17 Pro Max with a 6.6-inch screen, this is it.
Calus C17 Pro Max: Bigger Battery, Fewer Promises
The C17 steps up to a 6.9-inch screen and 256GB, and claims a 5,500mAh battery, the largest of the group. It has also been the cheapest, listed on Jumia at KSh 9,481 and later around KSh 10,071, usually bundled with a smartwatch, earbuds and an OTG cable.
What stands out is what the listing leaves out. There is no 5G in the title and no 50MP headline. That makes the C17 the most modest of the 6.9-inch Calus phones in its claims, which, given how the other two are sold, is no bad thing.
Calus IP 17 Pro Max: The One With 512GB on the Box
The IP 17 is the model Calus pushes hardest. Its listings promise a 6.9-inch HD+ display, 8GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, 50MP cameras on both sides, 5G and a 5,000mAh battery. It has sold for KSh 11,899 on Jumia and up to KSh 14,999 on Kilimall, and a 256GB version has sat at around KSh 10,999.
The real-world picture is less generous. A used IP 17 Pro Max listed on Mzuri, three weeks old, gives its screen as HD+ (720 x 1600) IPS LCD with a 48MP main camera and an 18MP selfie camera, and the seller is moving it on because it did not meet their performance needs. That does not prove the box is wrong, but it is a reason to check before trusting the 50MP and 5G figures.
The "IP" prefix is the most telling detail of all. It is there to put the phone next to the iPhone in a search box.
Calus M17 Pro Max: Same Template, Less Storage
On Jumia, the Calus M17 Pro Max has been advertised with exactly the IP 17's headline specs: 6.9 inches, 8GB of RAM, 50MP front and rear, 5G, 5,000mAh and Android 14. The only difference in the title is storage, 128GB instead of 512GB. Whether the two share the same internals is not something the listings answer.
The bigger trap is the name. M-Horse, a separate Chinese brand, sells an M17 Pro Max of its own on Jumia Kenya, listed at KSh 16,882 when we checked on 15 October 2026. That phone has a 6.8-inch HD+ screen, 128GB of storage and a 16MP rear camera with an 8MP selfie camera, and is sold as a 4G phone with no 5G claim. Its "8GB of RAM" is really 4GB plus 4GB of "extended" RAM borrowed from storage. If someone offers you an "M17 Pro Max", ask which brand before you ask the price.
The Letters Mean Less Than You Think
Read enough Calus listings and a pattern emerges. The C, IP and M prefixes behave like marketing labels rather than a model range. The same 256GB phone has been called both 17 Pro Max and IP 17 Pro Max on one page. The IP 17 and M17 share a spec template line for line. And none of the four names the chip inside, which is the one specification that would actually tell them apart.
That matters more when you sell than when you buy. A buyer searching for a C17 does not want an M17 with the same screen size, and a listing that says only "17 Pro Max" will get questions you could have answered in the title.
How to Check Which One You Have
- Look at the box and the back label. The exact model name and IMEI are printed there. Compare the IMEI with what
*#06#shows on the phone, then text it to 1555 for the Communications Authority's free check. Our IMEI guide explains the reply. - Open Settings, then About phone. The model field often shows the real factory model code, which may differ from the marketing name.
- Install DevCheck or CPU-Z. Both read the actual chip, RAM, storage and camera sensors. A "50MP" camera that reports a smaller sensor is using software upscaling.
- Check for 5G properly. Go to Settings, then SIM or Mobile network, then Preferred network type. If 5G is not an option, the phone is not a 5G phone, whatever the box says.
- Confirm the storage. Settings, then Storage, should show close to the advertised total once system files are accounted for. A 512GB phone showing far less is a red flag.
- Check the screen resolution in the same hardware app. Expect all of these phones to run at 720p.

Which One Should You Buy?
If you have already decided on a Calus, the C17 Pro Max is the safest pick: the biggest battery, the lowest price and the fewest claims to be disappointed by. The IP 17 makes sense only if you need the storage and accept that the camera and 5G figures may not survive a hardware app.
But the honest comparison is with the phones sitting next to them on the same Jumia page. Kenyan retailers list the Samsung Galaxy A06 (4GB/64GB) at around KSh 12,500 to 15,000, and Tecno and Infinix have entry models at similar money with service centres in every major town. You give up the iPhone look and the big storage numbers. You get specs you can believe and a phone that holds its resale value. Our guide to iPhone lookalike phones sold in Kenya covers those alternatives, and budget phones under KSh 15,000 compares the best of them.
Selling a Calus?
Put the exact model in the title: C17, IP 17 or M17, with the storage. Then add what the hardware app says rather than what the box says. Buyers searching Mzuri for a specific Calus are comparing listings line by line, and the seller with real numbers is the one they message first. Our guide to writing a listing that sells covers the rest.

What is the difference between the Calus C17, IP 17 and M17 Pro Max? On paper, the C17 has 256GB and the biggest battery with no 5G claim, the IP 17 has 512GB with 50MP cameras and 5G, and the M17 copies the IP 17's specs with 128GB. None of the listings name the chip, so the real differences are hard to confirm without a hardware app.
Which Calus 17 Pro Max is the best? The C17 Pro Max: the biggest battery, the lowest price and the fewest claims that may not hold up.
Is the Calus 17 Pro Max 5G? The IP 17 and M17 listings claim 5G; the plain 17 Pro Max and the C17 do not. Check under Settings, Mobile network, Preferred network type. If 5G is not listed, the phone does not support it.
Is the M17 Pro Max a Calus? Not always. M-Horse, a different brand, sells its own M17 Pro Max in Kenya with a 6.8-inch screen and no 5G claim. Check the brand on the back and the box.
How do I know which Calus model I have? Check the model name on the box and back label, then Settings, About phone. A hardware app such as DevCheck shows the real chip, RAM, storage and cameras.
